How It Works

Choosing to help someone — quietly, privately, and consistently — is one of the most powerful things a person can do. Here is how PenPal Promise works, step by step.

Step 1: Browse Profiles

Each profile shows a first name, a general location, and a little about the person or family. We share only what they’ve chosen to share, and never anything that could identify them without their consent.

Step 2: Choose Your Person

When someone’s story speaks to you, reach out through their profile page. We’ll introduce you privately and make sure everyone feels comfortable before any information is exchanged.

Step 3: Help in Your Own Way

Some penpals send grocery gift cards. Some pay a utility bill. Some send a care package or school supplies. There is no required amount and no minimum commitment — only kindness offered in whatever form you can give it.

Step 4: Stay as Long as You Like

Some penpal relationships last a month. Some last for years. Either is perfectly okay. You may step back at any time, and so may your penpal. We ask only that you give a little notice so we can support the transition gracefully.

Privacy for Everyone

We take privacy seriously — for the people receiving help and for those offering it. Full names, addresses, and contact details are never shared publicly. You decide how much of yourself to share, and so does your penpal.
